César García Urbano Taylor: Nutritionists Pick Their 8 Favorite Packaged Breakfasts

Image
In an ideal world, I would wake up every morning and have a leisurely breakfast with fresh coffee and a homemade veggie omelette. But in the real world, my mornings are usually crazy and I grab a packaged breakfast item while running out the door. While I’m a huge advocate for cooking meals and eating whole foods, some of the foods on supermarket shelves are great options for healthy eating in a hurry. That’s why I asked some fellow nutritionists for their picks for eating a healthy breakfast on the go. Here’s what they had to say, with some of my own picks thrown in! Nature’s Path Organic Breakfast Biscuits “When I’m in a rush, I love to grab Nature’s Path Organic Breakfast Biscuits , especially their blueberry chia flavor. The biscuits are perfect before an early morning run because they are packed with whole grains for energy, but don’t feel too heavy on my stomach. If I want something more substantial, I’ll have them with a packet of peanut butter and a piece of fruit.” – Rachae...

César García Urbano Taylor: 3 Out-Of-The-Box Races For Adventurous Runners

Image
Photo of Pikes Peak. Elevation: 14,115 feet. As a Type-A adventurer, I have a whole slew of lists–on Pinterest and on paper–to plan out special moments in my future. I’ve documented the songs I want to play at my wedding and the gifts I will buy for others. I even have a list of future hiking adventures I want to go on. It makes sense, then, that I have a list of my bucket list races. This is no ordinary list, as I am no ordinary runner. While it rightfully includes classic events like the Boston and New York City marathons, the list also reflects my thirst to escape suburban finish lines and adventure into more out-of-the-box competitions. Are you curious yet? Here are three races I have my sights set on: The Pikes Peak Ascent Ever since my intrepid hike down Pikes Peak as a teenager, I have dreamed of running up (and down) the incredible 14,115-foot mountain. I remember the thrill of hiking through the changing landscape, marveling at the breathtaking views as I weaved down the...

César García Urbano Taylor: Hyperice’s Hypervolt: The Latest In Vibration Recovery Technology

Image
Meet The Hypervolt Less than a year after the release of the Vyper 2.0, Hyperice is back in the news to unveil a new product: the Hypervolt. Though the basic concept of both products–vibration-triggered muscle recovery–is the same, the Vyper 2.0 is essentially a vibrating foam roller, while the Hypervolt delivers a more targeted user experience. Featuring four uniquely-shaped applicators, three speed options and a cordless, 2.5-pound body, the Hypervolt uses the Quiet Glide technology for which Hyperice has cultivated a reputation, making it a quiet and lightweight tool with which users can create a personalized experience based on their recovery needs. This kind of vibration-based technology has been shown to help runners boost circulation, relieve muscle soreness and improve range of motion. The company, which founded in 2010, has support from professional athletes like Lindsey Vonn, LeBron James and Lauren Collins, making it seem like the recovery-styled products it creates and t...

César García Urbano Taylor: Running At The Back Of The Pack May Not Be Such A Bad Thing

Image
Road races often have two police escorts: one at the front for elite runners and one at the back for those pulling up the rear. While it might be a thrill to run behind the first wave, the race doesn’t officially end until the last participants show up. For Jill Grunenwald , author of Running with a Police Escort: Tales from the Back of the Pack , running slow isn’t necessarily the worst position to be in. “No matter the race, there is always a last-place finisher. Even the Olympics have a last place finisher!” Grunenwald said. “All it really means is that on that particular day, at that particular race, I just happened to be the slowest person to show up. That’s it. Any other day, any other race, it could be a totally different story.” Jill Grunenwald, author of Running with a Police Escort: Tales from the Back of the Pack. Grunenwald, who started running for better health, accomplished an individual goal. But Andrea Michelcic has had a different experience. She’s always bee...

César García Urbano Taylor: Why I Don’t Have Mom Guilt–And How You Can Let Go Of Yours

Image
My mother died when she was 43 years old and I was only 17. She was overweight most of her life and struggled with dieting and exercise. She was a stay-at-home mom and did so much for my brother and me, but one of the single best lessons she left was to not feel guilty about taking time for herself–and how the only people who defined her as a “good parent” were her children. Here are the five most important parenting and self-care lessons I learned from losing my mom at a young age. Your Kids Want You To Spend Time Away From Them My mom stayed home with my brother and me while we were growing up in the 1980s, attending a very small Catholic school from first grade though high school. My mom was pretty strict about us spending time away from our house. She always wanted us to invite friends to our house instead of venturing to theirs, we rarely had sleepovers and I can count on one hand the number of times we had a babysitter so my parents could have a night out alone. I a...

César García Urbano Taylor: Grandma’s Marathon Training Recap – Weeks 1/2

Image
Hello friends! As I shared in an   earlier post, I have started working with a running coach. I am training for a June marathon – Grandma’s in Duluth, Minnesota.  My goal is to go sub-4 and I’ve been building up mileage and now am officially in marathon training mode.  Now that I am back to training, I will share my training recap every other week.   I hope you’ll join in and link up!   You can always follow my progress daily on  Instagram , where I share all my runs.   Week of February 12 Monday – 6 miles easy+ core work.  Tuesday – Took a rest day and moved my workout to Wednesday.   Wednesday – Two mile warm up, followed by 8 800s and a 1 mile cool down. Every 800 was at or faster than goal time (~4:00-4:05) except for one. I was SUPER proud of this workout. Especially because it was done after work which I don’t love.  Thursday – Five easy miles.   Friday – Could not pull myself out of bed so vowed to get my workout do...

César García Urbano Taylor: My Month Off From Running Was Worth The Frustration

Image
Yesterday was my first time running in a month. It is hard for me to not be able to run, push myself and push past my limits–to not be able to work harder than I did the day before. I’ve learned the hard way that when it comes to injuries, rest and recovery are so important to coming back better than ever. I injured my shoulder from overuse, and instead of resting (which is what the doctor prescribed!), I decided to push through the pain. I thought that “going lighter” would be enough. Let me tell you: it wasn’t. My inability to follow my doctor’s orders actually made my injury worse. To this day, I still have to be careful, because the injury was never able to properly heal. So when I felt a bad case of shin splints coming on, I forced myself to rest. Most runners know that shin splits are like a delivery from the devil: the pain can be unbearable, and there is no real solution. You can’t really foam roll your shins, and there is no stretch that really helps relieve tens...

César García Urbano Taylor: 5 Heart Disease Symptoms Everyone Should Know

Image
As a runner, heart disease is probably the last thing on your mind. After all, you’re in great cardiovascular shape and your heart gets stronger with each run, right? Well…heart disease can strike anyone—even runners, if they aren’t careful. February is American Heart Month, making it the perfect time to chat about your most important organ. If you experience any of these warning signs, it’s time to visit your doctor. Common Heart Disease Symptoms Shortness Of Breath (When You’re Not Running) Runners are no strangers to running (pun intended) out of breath. Though your lungs have to work overtime while running, they shouldn’t struggle for breath when you’re not exerting energy. If you experience shortness of breath while walking or during a low-intensity activity, talk to your doctor. Heart Palpitations Once again, you’re probably familiar with an increase in heart rate while practicing your sport. But an elevated heart rate or heart fluttering when you’re not active is ...

César García Urbano Taylor: 5 Common Mistakes Runners Make During Half-Marathon Training

Image
There are some common mistakes that new runners (and even some experienced ones) make when training for one of the most popular distances in our sport. If you’re gearing up for a spring 13.1, make yourself aware of these five common mistakes many make while training. 1. Starting Too Fast Starting too fast does not only pertain to races! Before beginning any half-marathon training program, you should honestly assess where you are and what a reasonable goal is. If you can, consult with a coach or take a look at your running log over the past six months and decide how much volume and speed you can handle. Taking on too much mileage or interval training before you build a solid base will result in exhaustion at best and injury at worst. 2. Wearing Something New On Race Day There is a golden rule in racing: nothing new on race day! From the hat on your head to the socks on your feet, all clothing and gear should be previously tested on at least one long run. Those race t-shirt...

César García Urbano Taylor: A Scientist Advises On Why Gut Health Is Vital For Runners

Image
A Conversation With Ph.D. Embriette Hyde If you’re not planning on having a meal soon, continue reading! Right now outside a lab in Southern California, Embriette Hyde, a scientist at the University of California San Diego, is studying human waste. In fact, she’s spent the better part of the past two years with the American Gut Project , an organization centered around studying the function of the human microbiome, the research of which could potentially allow scientists to someday cure diseases and create super athletes. After recovering from Lyme disease and wondering what “the best possible microbiome for a racer would be,” Lauren Petersen, a scientist at The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, Conn., decided to find out. When interviewed about her findings, Petersen suggested the research could not only be the future of probiotics but could potentially create stronger, quicker and faster to recover athletes. When the internet exploded with that news, H...

César García Urbano Taylor: Neely Spence Gracey’s Fit Pregnancy: 16-Week Check-In

Image
In January, professional runner Neely Spence Gracey shared some exciting news with Women’s Running : she’s expecting a baby in August! In the month since her announcement, she and her husband Dillon Gracey have also revealed the baby’s sex by way of a  balloon-popping video posted on Instagram and continue to update fans on social media. Last week, we checked in with Neely to ask how she’s feeling 16 weeks in, what role running currently plays in her life and how she’s pursuing a fit pregnancy. How are you feeling? What’s changed for you since we last spoke? Things are going well. Overall, I’ve been really fortunate. Nothing has hit me hard in terms of the morning sickness that some people struggle with in the first trimester. I was tired and a little sick, but it wasn’t anything compared to some of the terrible stories I’ve heard. I’ve successfully run every day so far; some of those days have only been a mile. I’m running less and less overall, and feeling worse and worse w...

César García Urbano Taylor: Time Based Speed Workouts for Runners

César García Urbano Taylor: Brooks Running CEO Jim Weber Knows You’re A Runner. Do You?

Image
In a recent article with Claire Suddath for Bloomberg Businessweek , Brooks Running CEO Jim Weber said that “running is not really a sport” and that, despite the fact that Suddath and many runners like her run marathons, they’re not really runners and should instead be classified as “self-defined runners.” As a result, runners were confused at best and furious at worst, asking for an explanation on social media and on the Brooks Running blog. They got one , but we recently reached out to the man himself, who was willing to discuss the Brooks brand in general and its running sphere specifically. First, we read the entire  Bloomberg Businessweek article and thought about what was reported over several long runs (naturally) before taking the opportunity to speak with Weber via conference call.  After this discussion, we came to the following conclusions; even so, we urge you to read all of the material and draw your own. It Was Smart The title of the Bloomberg...

César García Urbano Taylor: How To Tell If You Need Vitamin D Supplementation

Image
As a dietetics student, I believe that we should be able to meet most, if not all, of our micro and macronutrient needs from real food. I don’t take many supplements, preferring to eat a colorful, balanced diet. That being said, one of the few things I do supplement is vitamin D. After suffering from severe anxiety and generally feeling awful, my doctor discovered that I had a vitamin D deficiency.  Research suggests that up to 50 percent of the world’s population could be vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and maintain its calcium homeostasis. This is particularly important for runners at risk of incurring stress fractures. Studies have also shown that people with higher levels of vitamin D can jump higher, quicker and with more power than those who are vitamin D deficient, since it boosts the fast-twitch muscles and general muscle strength. Why Vitamin D Is Essential For Runners: reduces risk of stress fractures required for muscle cont...
