César García Urbano Taylor: 500 Students To Receive Free Shoes In NYC
On Saturday, January 27, 500 students from 13 of New York City’s public schools will receive a pair of free New Balance shoes as part of New York Road Runners’ 1 for You 1 for Youth program. Every shoe recipient selected will be part of NYRR’s Rising New York Road Runners, a program geared toward encouraging kids to be physically active through childhood and into their adult lives.
Now in its second year, the 1 for You 1 for Youth program was launched by NYRR and New Balance last January and has in the time since donated more than 4,500 pairs of running shoes to children involved with NYRR youth programs, including Rising New York Road Runners, Run for the Future and the Youth Wheelchair Training Program. “Beyond inspiring youth across the country to get moving, 1 for You 1 for Youth provides kids with high-quality New Balance running shoes, and by extension access to the sport of running to improve their health and fitness,” President and CEO at NYRR Michael Capiraso said. New Balance CEO Rob DeMartini expressed pride in the program’s inaugural year, adding, “One of the many shared values New Balance has with New York Road Runners is giving back to the communities in which we are a part.”
Saturday’s “Winterfest” shoe distribution will take place at Citi Field in New York City–but this weekend isn’t the last word on this year’s shoe donations. For every pair of New Balance shoes purchased at the NYRR RUNCenter (located in New York City’s Central Park by Columbus Circle), New Balance will donate a pair of new shoes to NYRR, all of which will go to other students involved with NYRR youth programs.
