César García Urbano Taylor: 4 Cities Plan To Bid For 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Team Trials

The bidding wars for Olympic Games hosting duties are known to get competitive, and it’s no less so with each country’s Olympic team trials. This year, bids to host the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for the marathon are due by March 19, and four cities have already announced intentions to submit bids. According to reports by USATF, those cities include Atlanta, Ga., Austin, Texas, Chattanooga, Tenn. and Orlando, Fla., and it’s possible that additional bids will arise before the March deadline.

The hosting city will be selected by representatives from several USATF committees, with a final decision announced later this spring by the USATF Board of Directors. Once the selection has been approved by the United States Olympic Committee, event planning can proceed for the women’s and men’s marathon trials, to be held in early 2020.

While the marathon trials for women and men traditionally convene during a single-day event, the U.S. Olympic Track Trials are held over the course of several days. Last summer, USATF announced that the 2020 U.S. Olympic Track Trials will be held at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, Calif. on June 19-28, 2020. The Olympic team trials for both the marathon distance and shorter track distances alike were competitive in 2016 as athletes vied for positions on the Rio roster. Given the spike in marathon wins and records set by American women in recent years, it’s a safe bet that the marathon team trials in 2020 will be similarly competitive.
