César García Urbano Taylor: Runner To Watch At This Weekend’s Millrose Games: Katelyn Tuohy

Image
Katelyn Tuohy, a sophomore runner at North Rockland High School in Thiells, NY. Photo by Tony Morales. Counting Down To The 2018 NYRR Millrose Games National running star Katelyn Tuohy is only 15, but she sounds like a seasoned athlete when talking about competing at the prestigious New York Road Runners Millrose Games on February 3 in New York City.  “Going into these races, I have more confidence knowing I’ve already accomplished so much in my career,” says Tuohy, who will run the high school girl’s mile at the world-renowned indoor track and field competition.    Indeed, the North Rockland High School sophomore from Thiells, NY has racked up an exceptional list of accomplishments.  Last fall, she topped her undefeated cross country season by winning the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore., finishing in 16:44.7 and setting a new course record. Her phenomenal performances have continued indoors. At the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games in Staten Island, NY ea...

César García Urbano Taylor: Give Yourself A Break For That First Post-Injury Race

Image
Racing Post-Injury Race Lesson Learned:   During your first race after recovering from a broken arm, give yourself (a bit of) a break. Race:  Arizona Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon Date: January 19, 2014 Location: Phoenix, Ariz. Steph’s Time: 1:56:00 This was my first race in more than a year, and I was nervous. The reason for an entire year without races? I had embarked on a backpacking adventure to Australia, South East Asia and New Zealand with three of my girlfriends. From August 2012 through April 2013 we lived as nomads, traveling where the wind blew us. I continued to run almost every day, but instead of using my runs to train for races, I used them to become acquainted with new cities, countries and cultures. I had originally intended to travel abroad for a full year, but my trip was cut short due to an unfortunate tumble of fate. One night in Sydney, as I clambered up the ladder of my hostel bunk bed, I slipped on my running shorts (of all ...

César García Urbano Taylor: 4 Races You’ve Got To Watch This Spring

Image
It’s not a Summer Olympics year, which means right off the bat that people get less excited about track and field, cross country and road racing. But before you mentally shut down and burrow away to wait for 2020, allow me to enlighten you: there are plenty of great races and competitions scheduled for this year. Don’t believe me? Just check out a few of these. IAAF World Indoor Championships March 1–4 This year’s indoor track and field championships will be held in Birmingham, England. That’s exciting for spectators, because England puts on top-notch track and field meets (remember the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London?). A quality meet can equate to quality races, and this is even more true in an Olympic off-year. The indoor and outdoor championships will both be the two pinnacle meets for elite runners in 2018. The Boston Marathon April 16 This race is a global phenomenon every year, but this year promises something extra special. Shalane Flanagan is reprising her role as ...

César García Urbano Taylor: Running Was A Completely Different Experience 15 Years Ago

Image
I have been running for almost 18 years now and so much has remained the same–but a lot has changed. For example, I still have a GPS watch, but it’s so much smaller and does so much more than my early watches did. I’m still registering for races, but now race registration happens almost exclusively online. I recently qualified to run the Boston Marathon, but I had to run 10 minutes faster than the qualifying time, which was not the case when I first ran it in 2007. Runners today have it so easy. Shoes And Gear In the year 2000, there were not nearly as many shoe choices for runners and Zappos.com was in its infancy, so you had to actually go to a shoe store to buy your running shoes. The year 2000 : My shoes of choice were Brooks Adrenaline because everyone was obsessed with over-pronation and no one had heard of barefoot running. My gear consisted of a jar of vaseline for chafing, an extra pair of cotton socks and whatever laces came with my shoes. There were no shoe inserts, no...

César García Urbano Taylor: 10-Track Playlist Featuring The Last 10 Super Bowl Performers

Image
Get Ready For Super Bowl LII With Justin Timberlake’s return to the Super Bowl this weekend, it seems like a good time to recap a few of the performers who’ve headlined since his much-discussed halftime appearance with Janet Jackson in 2004. To that end, we’ve compiled a list of the 10 most recent performers. Moreover, we’ve tried to single out the liveliest hit of each artist’s Super Bowl set so you can channel some of the big show’s energy during your next run. The list below starts with a prediction for this year’s show: JT’s recent single “Filthy.” Backtracking through time, you’ll find a staple of Lady Gaga performances, an anthem from Coldplay and the title track of Katy Perry’s triple platinum third album. In the middle, the string of solo hitmakers continues, with appearances from Bruno Mars, Beyoncé and Madonna. Near the beginning of the decade, you’ll find groups ranging from the Black Eyed Peas to The Who to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. In the run up to the b...

César García Urbano Taylor: Running Camps: The Perfect “Run-cations”

Image
NCAA runner turned high school coach Hillary Kigar has an answer for all things training–including suggestions for those looking to spice up their normal running routines. Camp Isn’t Just For Kids Looking to treat the runner in your life to something special? Consider an adult running camp! There are camps all around the U.S. in different styles and formats. Some take place in a retreat format over a weekend somewhere in the mountains; others may be over a week span and incorporate other outdoor activities like kayaking, mountain biking or hiking. Often, camps include lodging, meals and planned-out days filled with various running activities, small-group lecture sessions and social time to enjoy with other campers. Companies like REI sponsor outdoor women’s camps while other professional female runners host their own more intimate camps available for smaller groups. No matter your preference, camp can be a great way to get away and have a “run-cation” as you recha...

César García Urbano Taylor: Calf Muscle Strains (And What To Do About Them)

Image
While we often praise the powerhouse glutes and first-responder feet for their contributions to gait, it’s the calves that ultimately pull your heels up from the ground to allow forward movement. Injuring one or more of these hardworking lower-leg muscles can stop you dead in your tracks. Two major muscles comprise the calves. The gastrocnemius, which is the more superficial of these two, starts behind the knee as lateral and medial heads and attaches at the heel. The soleus lies deep beneath the gastrocnemius and runs from just below the knee down to the heel. Both of these muscles work to plantar flex the foot during running; the gastrocnemius also assists with flexion of the knee. Related: This Is Your Body When You Don’t Stretch Runners typically experience calf pain in the form of strains, which can range from mild stretching or complete tearing of a muscle, or cramps, which occur when a muscle is stuck in a state of contraction, says Chris Johnson, a physical therapist in Sea...

César García Urbano Taylor: Meet 3 Athletes Running In The 2018 World Marathon Challenge

Image
Imagine completing seven consecutive marathons, one per day, for an entire week. Now imagine that each of those marathons is on a different continent. Between races, you must sleep and recover onboard airplanes and fuel and hydrate in airports. This seemingly outrageous concept will soon become reality for a group of 51* runners. On January 30, these runners will begin the World Marathon Challenge: seven marathons in seven days on all seven continents. The runners (who come from 11 different countries) will complete marathons in Novo (Antarctica), Cape Town (Africa), Perth (Australia), Dubai (Asia), Lisbon (Europe), Cartagena (South America) and Miami (North America). We recently spoke to several notable individuals completing the challenge to learn what motivated them to embark on an undertaking of this magnitude. César García Urbano Taylor: Sharpen Your Training By Understanding Your Unique Physiology

Image
Women are having a moment. We are doing things once thought impossible by coming together and expanding on what we believe we know to be true. In running specifically, women are breaking all kinds of barriers. From Shalane Flanagan’s epic New York City Marathon win  to  Molly Huddle’s crushing new American record in the half marathon , we are getting faster, stronger and smarter. The brains behind the operation is where Stacy Sims, Ph.D., comes in. The author of what is for many female athletes something of a training bible, Sims wrote her book ROAR:  How to Match Your Food and Fitness to Your Unique Female Physiology for Optimum Performance, Great Health, and a Strong, Lean Body for Life   based on the concept that women are not small men–therefore, they should not follow the “shrink it and pink it” mentality when it comes to training. An accomplished triathlete herself, Sims knows all too well that training methodologies need to change where women are concer...

César García Urbano Taylor: Base Building Training Recap 2

Image
New year, new training plan! As I shared in an   earlier post, I have started working with a running coach. I am getting back in shape and gearing up for a June marathon – Grandma’s in Duluth, Minnesota. Now that I am back to training, I will share my training recap every other week. Once I am closer to the marathon, I will share my training recap weekly. But until then, here we go! You can always follow my progress daily on Instagram , where I share all my runs.   Week of January 15 Monday – 4.35 miles + core work.  Tuesday – I was in Chicago for work and the streets were snow covered and icy so I hit the treadmill. 5X1000 on the treadmill fueled by Hamilton. It was super hard but got it done.  Wednesday – REST DAY is the BEST day! Always! Thursday – 4 freezing miles in Chicago + core work. A bit over winter with this one!  Friday – Crazy day – no run.  Saturday – 10 miles – it was cold but not terrible and we got it done!  Sunday – ...

César García Urbano Taylor: 5 Things Women’s Running Loved This Week: January 26, 2018

Image
Barnana Organic Peanut Butter Chewy Banana Bites, $15 For 3-Pack These tasty bites are a hot commodity around the WR  offices. With a base of dehydrated bananas (they taste way better than they sound!) wrapped in an organic peanut butter coating, they have a creamy, chewy texture that makes for perfect pre-run fuel (or an afternoon snack). Each serving contains 180 calories, 25 grams of carbs plus a hefty dose of potassium (350 milligrams) and three grams of protein. Biena Chickpea Snacks Rockin’ Ranch, $18 For 4-Pack If you haven’t had chickpeas before, now is the time to try ’em out. Biena’s chickpea snacks  range widely in flavor from sea salt to cinnamon and beyond, but the Rockin’ Ranch is our favorite (the flavor similarity to Cool Ranch Doritos is impressive). With 120 calories in each quarter-cup serving and 10 percent of your daily recommended protein, this salty and crunchy snack can easily become a favorite–and healthy!–cure to the afternoon munchie...

Image
Rising New York Road Runners receive free running shoes through 1 for You 1 for Youth in 2017. Photo by NYRR. On Saturday, January 27, 500 students from 13 of New York City’s public schools will receive a pair of free New Balance shoes as part of New York Road Runners’ 1 for You 1 for Youth program. Every shoe recipient selected will be part of NYRR’s Rising New York Road Runners, a program geared toward encouraging kids to be physically active through childhood and into their adult lives. Now in its second year, the 1 for You 1 for Youth program was launched by NYRR and New Balance last January and has in the time since donated more than 4,500 pairs of running shoes to children involved with NYRR youth programs, including Rising New York Road Runners, Run for the Future and the Youth Wheelchair Training Program. “Beyond inspiring youth across the country to get moving, 1 for You 1 for Youth provides kids with high-quality New Balance running shoes, and by extension access to the s...

César García Urbano Taylor: How Running Became One Woman’s Full-Time Job

Image
This article originally appeared on Angelica “Helly” Bermudez’s blog Helly On The Run . It’s been a bit of a whirlwind career-wise as I try to figure out whether I want to be a working mom or a stay-at-home mom (SAHM). I was a teacher for a long time, had a kid, went part-time, had another kid, took a year off, went back to work, then left work altogether. When I’m asked how I’ve been able to improve so much with my running, I must admit that I think a big reason is just that—I haven’t been working. There’s definitely something to be said about how work stress impedes on one’s running performance (at least for me). I honestly think I did so well racing last year because running became the only thing I worked for and toward. Besides taking care of my kids and home (two huge things), my only other big commitment was staying on track with my training schedule. I really thought of it as my job. When Thursday called for 11 miles at tempo pace, that’s what I did becaus...

César García Urbano Taylor: Love Pasta? Give These Plant-Based Picks A Try

Image
Noodle On This Nontraditional pastas—made with a variety of healthful ingredients and more readily available than ever—are a tasty, nutritious way to enjoy a runner’s favorite comfort meal. Pasta has been a long-time pre-race staple for athletes—it’s affordable, easy to make and provides beneficial carbohydrates to stock your muscles with fuel without giving you too much fiber (something that could increase your chances of GI distress). Most standard pastas you’d buy off of grocery-store shelves also use enriched flour, meaning there’s a host of other nutrients in that box of noodles, says Marni Sumbal, M.S., R.D., a board-certified sports dietitian and Ironman triathlete. “Pasta is a great source of energy and nutrients, such as iron, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, manganese, selenium and folate,” she says. So with all that going for your pasta, why would you want to switch to something not so traditional? “Plant-based pasta alternatives offer a health advantage, as they are loaded...

César García Urbano Taylor: Neely Spence Gracey: “We Are Having A Baby!”

Image
New Running Buddy Arriving August 4 “We are having a baby!” Neely Spence Gracey wrote to Women’s Running earlier this week. Excited to share the news she’s kept bottled up since early December, Gracey and her husband Dillon are sharing the above announcement welcoming her “new workout partner” this summer (her due date is August 4). “This is something I’ve wanted for a long time,” Gracey told us over the phone. “I’ve always wanted a family.” As a competitive distance runner, Gracey has earned several titles over the last few years: two-time Chicago Marathon winner, top American finisher at the 2016 Boston Marathon and eighth-place finisher at the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon among them. But the “mom” title will likely be her most valuable yet—and it’s certainly the one she’s most eager to embrace. Even so, putting her professional running career on a temporary hold was a difficult decision for Gracey to make. “Being a professional athlete, it’s challenging to have to put you...

César García Urbano Taylor: A Glimpse At The 2018 Anantapur International Relay Ultramarathon

Image
How far would you run to change the world? This is the question race organizers posed before the launch of the third iteration of the Anantapur International Relay Ultramarathon, the first–and only–race of its kind in India. On January 23, 76 runners set out on a 170-kilometer route, each athlete running 40K before passing the journey along to a teammate. Though dozens of runners participated in this year’s race, the idea behind the ultramarathon started with just one. In 2016, ultrarunner Juan Manuel Viera of Spain ran 150K through India on his own. One year later, he repeated the exercise with more than 40 athletes, leading to the continued expansion of the event for 2018. This year, the Anantapur International Relay Ultramarathon partnered with the Vicente Ferrer Foundation USA, a non-profit based in Washington, D.C. that strives to make impactful positive changes in India’s rural communities. As a result of this partnership, the race organizers declared a goal of raising enough f...

César García Urbano Taylor: A Runner’s Honest Feedback After Trying CrossFit

Image
I was excited to sign up for the new CrossFit gym in my town when it opened because I’d heard so much about the benefits runners can glean from CrossFit workouts. Unfortunately, I soon discovered it was not the right fit for me–or potentially anyone with a specific race goal in mind. Before you sign up, take a look at these pros and cons of how my “box” (CrossFit gym) operated so you can make an informed decision before trying it yourself. Workout Of The Day (Or WOD) The WOD, as it is commonly referred to by CrossFit members, is posted to an app the night before it’s presented at the box. Pro: You know what you will be doing the next day. Con: If it doesn’t fit with your running schedule, there is nothing you can do about it. I had trouble scheduling my strength training because I didn’t know what the workout would be until 7:30 p.m. the night before a 9:30 a.m. class. If you have a race goal you’re working toward and your running schedule is laid out for the week, there’s no way...
