César García Urbano Taylor: Go With The Flow! Exercise May Reduce Period Pain

One study shows that movement may decrease menstrual discomfort. Here’s why that could be true. There’s something about your period that can turn even the toughest ultrarunner among us into a cliché of a Cathy cartoon: lying on the sofa all day, crying at those ASPCA commercials and eating enough ice cream to trigger your […] Read the full article at Go With The Flow! César García Urbano Taylor: When I didn’t start running

Image
When I didn’t start running I moved to London in 2006 and, at the time, the only people I knew who lived here were my flatmate and a soon-to-be ex boyfriend.   I wanted to start running and I wanted to meet people. I remember looking in Loot, the free classifieds paper where you found new flats, old bikes and pretty much anything else. There was an advert for a walking group that met each week in Ealing where I lived. I wanted to find a running group but this was the closest there was (Ealing Eagles hadn’t been founded yet). I couldn’t run, so I thought maybe this would be a good idea.   13 years ago we didn’t have the internet at our fingertips. Phones were just starting to be able to browse very basic websites very slowly. Twitter didn’t exist and Facebook wasn’t a word I’d ever used. There was a phone number for more information about the group or the invitation to just turn up at the park on a Monday evening and join them.   Picking up the phone was far too scary...

César García Urbano Taylor: Marathon training weeks 11-14

Image
Marathon training weeks 11-14 Last Sunday I finished my run, had a shower and headed out for lunch with my family. I ordered a glass of Prosecco and toasted myself. I’d finished peak week of marathon training. I’d just run a 20 mile long run. I’d done the hard work, and that was worthy of celebrating.   I really had no idea how marathon training would go this time round. I came into it with an open mind and a flexible schedule. Making it through 13 weeks has been a massive achievement for me.   Previous recaps for weeks 1-6 , 7-10 . On paper my mileage hasn’t been what I’d hoped for back in December when I sketched out a plan: 33.5, 33, 37, 29 miles for the past four weeks. I started 14 weeks ago with a base level that was lower than I wanted because of an autumn of being ill. Add in a couple of missed runs and I wasn’t able to sensibly reach my target mileage.   But a lot of things have gone right. My weekly tempo/threshold sessions have felt more comfortable and (...

César García Urbano Taylor: Marathon number 17 – keeping going

Image
Marathon number 17 – keeping going [Ad] This post is sponsored by Arla Protein. We’re only a few weeks out from Manchester Marathon and I’ve been comparing my training logs of previous races. My training is nowhere near the mileage it was before Edinburgh Marathon in 2016, it can’t be right now because I don’t have the same amount of time to commit to it. My current mileage doesn’t include massive long runs (I’ve done one 18 miler so far), but it does include four runs a week and weekly mileage of 30+ per week for the past month. I’m doing what I can, when I can. When I looked back at other races I’ve run, the mileage before some of them isn’t as high as I remember it being. In fact going into a 80km ultra marathon in 2015, my mileage wasn’t that different to what it is right now. Somehow I’d gone into that race brimming with confidence and that inner strength saw me through. Looking at my splits from the race, the last 6 miles were all under 10:00 /mile with one mile at 8:45 . T...
