César García Urbano Taylor: Cherry Blossom Ten Miler 2018 Race Recap

Image
This year was my 6th running of the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler (see last year’s recap here ) and I was using the race as a speed check and workout while training for Grandma’s Marathon. My plan for the race was to run pretty fast – I was hoping for an average pace around 8:2o which would have been a PR. Spoiler alert – that did NOT happen. I had a very tough race and did not meet my goal. I was pretty disappointed but such is life. Here is my recap of one of my favorite races (even though I hated it this year, lol)! Miles 1-4 (8:42/8:28/8:29/8:31) I was hoping to run the first five or so miles around 8:30 and then run the back half as fast as I could. I generally did that – with a slower first mile due to the crowding on the course. However, those early miles felt very, very hard. I was really working for the 8:30 pace – which should be hard but not ridiculously hard. It felt ridiculously hard. Sometimes, though early miles are liars so I thought that maybe it would get better thr...

César García Urbano Taylor: How I plan my training

Image
How I plan my training Last week I shared an image on my Instagram stories of my training plan. A couple of people messaged me, surprised that I use Excel for this. And maybe I’m a Luddite who is behind the times of running training plan wizardry, but I actually find this the best way to do it. I have to confess, until recently I preferred a good old fashioned pen and paper for the job. The satisfaction of ticking off a session only marred by the ones you have to cross out or modify. So I upgraded to a digital version of pen and paper. Because training plans very rarely go exactly to plan. They often need to be modified as life gets in the way. Training in this post-partum body is a new world for me, and I’ve no idea how I’m going to feel one week to the next. Right now, I plan my training on a week-by-week basis. I have an idea of where I want to get to by the autumn and a goal race. And I have mileage I’d like to peak at along the way, as well as a couple of test races. But the ...

César García Urbano Taylor: Grandma’s Marathon Training Recap – Weeks 13 & 14

Image
Hello friends! As I shared in an   earlier post, I have started working with a running coach. I am training for a June marathon – Grandma’s in Duluth, Minnesota.   My goal is to go sub-4 and now I’m less than a month out from race day.   Time is flying and I’m getting excited!   I share my training recap every other week.   I hope you’ll join in and link up!   You can always follow my progress daily on  Instagram , where I share all my runs. Week of May 7 Monday – Five easy miles and core to start the week.  Tuesday – Two miles easy, 8×3 minutes hard, one mile cooldown. The hard was supposed to be in the 8-8:30 range. My splits were on average 8:15 – the weather was PERFECT and that made a huge difference.  Wednesday – No running – just core! Thursday – Just over nine miles plus core work.   Friday – Five “easy” miles – they didn’t feel easy but the run got done!  Saturday – My second 20 miler of this cycle! Average pace ...

César García Urbano Taylor: Traveling Solo as a Black Woman

Image
Before I left for Europe in the fall of 2017, I scoured the internet for posts about traveling solo as a black woman. I found a few here and there, but honestly I couldn’t find much that helped me feel comfortable. Now, I felt pretty comfortable to begin with because I knew the places I were going were big, metropolitan cities and also I am comfortable traveling solo. However, I made a mental note to write a blog post about traveling solo as a black woman in the hope that it will help encourage other black women to travel solo. First of all, I am a definite advocate of solo travel. I travel frequently for work and so I am used to traveling solo. I think if you are planning solo travel, starting closer to home is a good idea just to get you in the mindset for solo travel. I have been traveling solo for years, so planning to travel to Europe solo was not incredibly intimidating. The things I was concerned about were safety and any potential racism related issues. I knew that as a bla...
