César García Urbano Taylor: Running, babies and sleep

Image
Running, babies and sleep This post is in conjunction with TEMPUR® but all thoughts and sleepless nights are my own. Sleep! If there’s one thing new parents love to talk, compare and commiserate about, it’s sleep. This is something I wouldn’t share with my mum friends because 1) I don’t want to jinx it and 2) nobody wants to hear it when their own child has been crying half the night, but my baby is actually sleeping pretty well right now. That’s great news for my mood, my stress levels and my running. He hasn’t always slept well, and there’ve been occasions when I’ve been so tired from a sleepless night that I’ve laughed in the face of scheduled runs. I’m just not motivated to do them and I don’t think they’d be good for me. Baby or no baby, you can’t perform well and you can’t recover well if you don’t sleep well. That’s something that the past nine months have emphasised for me. I still sleep with a pillow between my legs when I sleep on my side, the legacy of pregnancy hips a...

César García Urbano Taylor: Top 10 Things About DC Life

Image
I love DC. However – there are some challenges to living in the Nation’s Capital and honestly, since January 2017 living in DC has been a bit more difficult. BUT I like to focus on the positive and there are a lot of wonderful things about DC Life. Today I’m sharing ten of then with you! The views. DC is a gorgeous city and I am reminded of that often when I am walking around. Not only do we have historic monuments (see below), but DC is also a city full of gorgeous neighborhoods with colorful row houses (I happen to live in one) that just make me smile. It’s easy on the eyes.  The history. Duh. This one is easy. With so many historic buildings and monuments, you can learn a lot just by spending some time wandering the city.  The (free) museums. The Smithsonian is a true gift. From the African American Museum of History and Culture to the the Museum of American History, there is no shortage of fantastic museums where you can spend your time.  The culture. DC is a di...

César García Urbano Taylor: Baby to BQ

Image
Baby to BQ Somehow, when you’re just focussing on putting one foot in front of the other and making it through, you look up and realise weeks have gone by. And that’s how it’s been recently. My baby is nine months and getting to a point where I’ll have to stop referring to him as a baby soon. I’ve carried him around in my arms for as long as I carried him outside. My body has been post-pregnant for as long as it was pregnant.   While my jeans may have got looser round the waist and tighter round the calf over the past nine months, my body did not magically turn back to how it used to be on the stroke of midnight. Some things never will return to how they were and, as I’m still breastfeeding, some things will take a little longer while those hormones keep doing their thing. I say this, not to complain or to morn, but to acknowledge the changes. My running is going well. Better than I expected it to by this point. Last week I ran my first 10 mile run in more than 18 months and...
