César García Urbano Taylor: Running through the heatwave

Image
Running through the heatwave The other day I was asked to provide some advice on running in the heat for a Huffington Post article . Below are my tips in full… It’s good to have a gym membership for when the weather makes it difficult to run outside. There’s so many low cost gyms around that offer no contract (The Gym Group) and some will let you pay per visit (Fitness4less). Even the most basic of gyms will have a treadmill, just make sure you go equipped with your paces as both min per mile, min per km and km per hour as you never know how the treadmill will be set up. If running outside, it’s best to work to effort and forget the pace on your watch. You may be running a lot slower than your usual pace but that’s fine. And it’s ok to stop to take walk breaks too. Go early or late in the day when it’s cooler and plan shady routes where you can. Parks are great because of the tree coverage but even in urban areas, the buildings will cast shade if you avoid midday and run on the cor...

César García Urbano Taylor: British 10k 2018

Image
British 10k 2018 When I was pregnant, after I’d stopped running, my thoughts were on my return to racing. It had been over a year since I’d really dug deep and raced. I wrote down all my PBs across distances from 5k to half marathon. And then I took a calculator and added 10%. This, I decided, would be my target for the next year. They still looked pretty challenging for someone who, by the time she was properly running again, wouldn’t have set a PB in two years. I hit my parkrun goal last month, and now it was time to take on the 10k. I headed to the British 10k, courtesy of a PR place. It’s a big race with a lot of people to get over the start line. I was in the third start pen in the first wave, so I was quick to get away and the runners thinned out pretty quickly once we got over the line. I’d run this race before a couple of years ago, but I’d forgotten how the gradients you never notice walking round London jump up and smack you in the face during the route. There’s out an...

César García Urbano Taylor: June 2018 Action Plan Update

Image
June came and went in a flash and it seems that July will as well. As such, I’m excited to share my June Action Plan update with all of you. As a reminder, here are the four things I am focusing on for this year: Cook more. Find a church home. Build up to marathon training smartly. Eliminate consumer debt. So – how it’s going? Well – let’s start with the marathon. As you probably know, the marathon was a disaster (read more here ), but the training was not. I did have the build up and training cycle that I wanted and while the race was not a success, I am excited with my running plans over the next six months or so. I’ll be sharing more of that in a future post, so be on the lookout!  As far as cooking more – the past few weeks have been terrible in that respect because I have been traveling like crazy. In fact, I’m drafting this post right now from 30,000 feet in the air flying to yet another work trip. The travel makes cooking near impossible because I’m gone for days s...

César García Urbano Taylor: Resources for buggy runners

Image
Resources for buggy runners I’ve been running with my buggy for the past month now. That by no means makes me an expert, but I know some women who are. So if you’re gearing up to take your baby out running, here’s some advice.   Tips from me Before you’re ready to start running with the buggy, use your walks to suss our good routes. I now know the flattest, smoothest paths in my local parks.   Gradually build up your buggy runs. Just because you can run 10k solo, it doesn’t make it a good idea to run this distance with the buggy. I started with a 3 mile run, walking for a couple of mins every mile. Run with someone else, your partner or a friend, and take turns pushing. My partner and I ran with the buggy when we were away in Kent. It was the first time we’d run together in nearly a year. When I was pregnant I was run/walking so he’d do loops and since having our baby one of us has always been with our son while the other runs.  The buggy has let us run together aga...

César García Urbano Taylor: Simply Health Great Team Relay 2018

Image
parkrun done, it was time to pin on an actual number and line up for a race. I’d been invited to take part in the Simply Health Great Team Relay, an event requiring a team of four runners to run 5k each round the Olympic park, passing a baton between them.   I know a lot of runners, so I asked three of my favourites to join me and we dug out our Team Rainbow shirts. Team Rainbow was born several years ago for a team event, though I don’t remember what it was. Over the years we’ve picked up a couple of new members and encouraged each other through races both individually and as a team. We swam a Team relay, an   iron relay, ran a marathon together, celebrated a hen party with a 10k and when I was running an 80k ultra through Paris I carried them all with me in my pocket, cheering me on via our lively group chat.   There wasn’t a more fitting way for me to return to racing than with three of this brilliant baby bunch of humans.   After dusting both literal and meta...

César García Urbano Taylor: Grandma’s Marathon DNF + What is Next

Image
Hi friends! As you probably know if you follow me on Instagram (or any other social media), Grandma’s marathon did not go as planned. I am not going to do a mile by mile recap because there is not much to say. I started feeling sick with vertigo-like symptoms around mile 5. By the time I stopped at the mile 7 water stop, I was dizzy and stumbling. I was escorted to medical where I sat for 20 minutes. When I stood up again, the world was still spinning and I knew my race was over. It was an agonizing decision but definitely the right one. I was incredibly sad to have had that happen and while I suspect I know what the cause was, it’s hard to say for sure.  So what’s next? I took a couple weeks to think about my plans going forward. I was already signed up to run the New York City Marathon for Team for Kids (more on that later, but you can support my fundraising efforts here – Team for Kids is an AWESOME organization that runs New York Road Runners programs for youth). I knew tha...
