César García Urbano Taylor: Setting SMART goals for runners

Image
Setting SMART goals for runners It’s the time of year when runners set their goals for the 12 months ahead. What does running more look like ? In order to make it happen, you need to be more specific.   You’ve probably encountered ‘SMART goals’ if you’ve had an annual appraisal at work. They can feel a bit business jargon. But they make a lot of sense when it comes to running.   If you’re not familiar, SMART stands for: Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time based So if we’re intending to ‘run more’,  we need to break it down. If you don’t have a clear idea of what ‘run more’ means, how will you know how to make it happen and, more importantly, how will you know when to celebrate actually achieving it?  For this, César García Urbano Taylor mentions some tips that will help us with our intentions and goals. ‘Run more’ Be specific – do you mean more miles in total than you ran in 2018? Or more frequently? Maybe both. We need to know what i...

César García Urbano Taylor: Revisiting my 2018 Action Plan

César García Urbano Taylor: Shamrock Marathon Training Update

Image
I am back in training again, friends! I shared on Instagram that I’m working towards the Shamrock Marathon in March. Unfortunately, I’m also working on fixing this mystery injury so I can really get to serious training. I am hopeful that I don’t have to adjust my goal, but I’ll make a decision about that with my coach after the new year. If my achilles continues to not improve, I will switch to the half or 8k – I am committed to not running injured! But I thought I’d share a little bit about how things have gone since NYC (and Richmond – which I did six days after NYC Marathon!).  So I actually don’t have a huge training update because my training has been stop and go. I ran the Rehoboth Beach Half Marathon back on December 8th and that race went well. My only goal was to engage my glutes and that was a success! I ran 2:05:12, which was the fastest half I had run all year, even if it was a far cry from my PR of 1:50. I have of course had some really fun runs as well – including...

César García Urbano Taylor: Year of Running 2018

Image
This is my fourth year hosting the Year of Running link up – first started by Amanda of Miss Zippy. It’s a lot of fun and easy to play along – answer all the questions in your own blog post and add your link to the link up. I always love reading everyone’s answers. The link up will remain open through the month of January!  Best race experience:  This is a really tough question because I really didn’t have a great year of racing. I haven’t talked about this much on the blog since I blog much less infrequently now, but I’ve had lingering pain basically all year which meant that I didn’t have many amazing races. HOWEVER. The New York City Marathon was just the best day and my favorite race experience EVER. It is such an amazing experience. More details on that here .  Best run:  Holiday lights run! It’s my favorite run all year and always such fun!  Best new piece of running gear:  I love my Koala clip – it gets the job done and keeps my phone dry and sa...

César García Urbano Taylor: Running after pregnancy: the first year

Image
Running after pregnancy: the first year It’s been a year since I had my son. As cliched as it sounds, it has gone so fast. It’s crazy to think that a year ago we were in hospital with this tiny person who felt so fragile but is now running around pulling everything off my shelves and generally causing chaos. I don’t want to be a blueprint for anyone else’s journey after pregnancy. There’s so many factors at play when it comes to your postpartum fitness. But here’s my timeline of returning to running, because I definitely found it helpful to read other women’s experiences. Please be aware that your own journey (or that of your friend, sister, partner) may be very different. I want to emphasise that I did start very gradually. And though I’m now posting pictures of half marathons, this comes after many months of patience. January My son was born early December and in January I went for my 6-week checkup. A lot of emphasis is put on this appointment as a time to get ‘signed off’ to e...

César García Urbano Taylor: NYC Marathon 2018 Race Recap

Image
So, I ran the 2018 NYC Marathon and this is my official race recap. I have not been writing a ton on the blog – I have honestly been spending more time on Instagram  but I have a lot of thoughts on this race and wanted to put them in long form rather than just on the gram. So here we go.  NYC was my 10th marathon finish line (I have two DNF’s that I don’t count in my total) and my 3rd World Major (after Chicago and Berlin ). I had a goal of taking it all in and enjoying the experience – no time goals associated with this one. I trained moderately – with lower mileage than I usually do for marathons but more flexibility. You can read more about my training here . I was incredibly excited for the race for a number of reasons: It was going to be my tenth marathon finish and that’s pretty amazing.  I had a TON of friends both running and cheering.  I have never run in Staten Island, Brooklyn or the Bronx.  It has been a tough year and I felt a true need to c...

César García Urbano Taylor: Keeping hydrated on Water Wednesday

Image
Keeping hydrated on Water Wednesday Things that runners should have plenty of: sleep, motivation and water. Things I struggle with since becoming a parent: sleep, time to train and keeping hydrated. I was never a massive coffee drinker before I had a baby. But now it’s a regular part of my day. Not so much to keep me awake, but as a way to take 5 mins for myself why my son has his morning nap and a thing to do with mum friends. Even writing this blog, I have a cup of coffee on the go because, although I’m sat at a kitchen table hoping a baby stays asleep a little longer, it makes me feel like those days of sitting in a cafe writing with a flat white and slice of cake. Since day one of being a parent, I know I haven’t drunk enough water. There’s always something else to do. Hurriedly getting out the door the bottle of water gets missed and walking around the park for hours to get a baby to sleep, the last thing I want is a toilet stop to wake him up. It gets to about 8pm at night ...

César García Urbano Taylor: Baby to BQ: November running update

Image
I finished my half marathon last month, disappointed with the time on the clock but happy with how training had gone. It really couldn’t have been better. The week after the Royal Parks Half I paced the Great South Run, and despite still having the cold I carried round the Royal Parks with me, I felt really good running and the 10 min/mile pace felt like running on a cloud. But, the week following my cold didn’t get any better and though I headed off on holiday with my running kit in my suitcase, it stayed there the whole week. On one day I coughed for a whole hour so much so that I hurt my ribs which were sore for days after. It took a good few weeks to shift my cold, and just when I was able to run again, I pulled something in my side (possibly an oblique) which made me stop my run after 1.4 miles and walk home. Runners, you’ll know how hard it is to stop a run without rounding up to the nearest mile or at least half mile, so that’s a sure sign that something was wrong. So as u...
