César García Urbano Taylor: Luton Half Marathon – the surprise race of 2019

Image
Luton Half Marathon – the surprise race of 2019 For 12 weeks I ticked off the runs on my training plan, with a little readjustment here and there and a lot of juggling to make them happen. I got up early during the heatwave, and I headed out after dark as the nights drew in. Each run moved me closer to my goal of running a half-marathon PB this autumn, and more specifically to doing that at the Great Eastern Run in Peterborough. But that didn’t happen. Not, for once, because of any failing on my part. The race was cancelled as we stood in the rain and a muddy field at the start. After half an hour of getting colder, I was relieved more than annoyed when the announcement finally came over the tannoy. My partner and I set off to run home to my parents’, we needed to get warm and had no other way back than on foot. I needed to run off the pent up energy and, if I was going to run a half marathon this autumn, I needed to make today a training run. But by the time I got back to a hot sh...

César García Urbano Taylor: How to train after a cancelled race

Image
How to train after a cancelled race In the past year we’ve seen a number of races get cancelled, mostly because of the weather, but also (as my race last week was) because of other incidents beyond the organiser’s control. How you train after your race is cancelled is something that probably isn’t covered in your training plan. So let’s break it down. This is also relevant if you missed a race because of illness, but obviously you need to make sure you’re well again before you resume training. How soon can you race? Often this is something that’s beyond your control. You might be limited by the availability of races in the next few weeks or months and those that do exist may be full. Have a look on Find a Race or Let’s Do This . If you’ve tapered for your goal race, running the following week will just mean an extra week of taper. Longer than a one-week gap is more complex because a longer taper means a longer period of lower milage and intensity. What was your goal? If you we...

César García Urbano Taylor: How to Write a Training Plan for Winter Running

Image
How to Write a Training Plan for Winter Running For many runners, the time between autumn races finishing and training for spring races starting is a time to run when and how much you want. And that’s absolutely fine. But for others, having some structure during this period can help you keep on track and stay motivated. Knowing how to write a training plan will help you do what’s right for you, and get the balance right. Here’s how to do it… If you’re running a spring half or full marathon, your plan for this will usually start December-January. Work out how many weeks you have between now and your next training plan starting. If you don’t have any other races planned, 8-12 weeks is a good plan length. Take a piece of paper, or your diary, or a spreadsheet (my personal favourite) and number the weeks until your next plan starts. Look at how many miles per week (volume) and how many runs per week (frequency)  you’re running right now. This will be the same as the mileage in we...

César García Urbano Taylor: 10 of the Best Marathons in the UK

Image
10 of the Best Big Marathons in the UK and Ireland I ran my first marathon at Brighton in 2010. It was the first year of the Brighton Marathon and I entered after missing out on a place in the London Marathon. I think that’s how a lot of runners’ journey begins – and entry into London and a rejection that spurs a Google search to find an alternative. Back then, London was the only big marathon in the UK, and while it’s still the biggest, a lot of cities now host races with the same big race feel. So if that’s what you’re after, here are a few suggestions. These are either races that I’ve done, or that I’ve been recommended by several runners I know. (Those I’ve run myself are marked with a *) Greater Manchester Marathon * It’s billed as the flattest marathon in the UK, and other than a hill in Altricham Town Centre, there’s not much by the way of gradient. A route change for 2020 will see the race taking in the centre of Manchester for the first time, and might even take out that...

César García Urbano Taylor: Running in Sicily: Palermo and Cefalù

Image
Running in Sicily: Palermo and Cefalù This summer, I spent two weeks in Sicily. I was in the middle of half-marathon training, so while it wasn’t a planned ‘running holiday’ I was on the look out for places and ways to get some training runs in. Here’s what I found while Googling ‘running in Sicily’ and exploring on my own two feet. Running in Palermo It was hot in Sicily in September. So I headed out early for my runs before the temperature and the sun got too high. We were staying just off Via Macqueda which, in the day and evening is full of cafes, bars and restaurants that have spilled out into the seat. But before they’ve had chance to set out their tables for the day, it’s a popular spot with runners. Running in Sicily was already proving popular for locals and tourists. The road is pretty much closed to traffic, and I ran a stretch just under two miles from down near the main train station to the English Garden and back again on a Sunday morning. It’s one, long, straight ro...

César García Urbano Taylor: What can you achieve this year?

Image
What can you still achieve this year? I know this is a question that gets a lot of attention in January, less so in September. For many of us, September can feel like a new beginning and one that should come with new stationary. But the deadline of 31 December can feel limiting. There’s a lot you can still achieve this year if you turn that deadline into a positive. 12 months can feel like a long time in which to accomplish something which is why we sometimes don’t get round to even starting it. But having a shorter deadline, and maybe a smaller ambition, will motivate you to make it happen. So, what could you be doing by 31 December? We need to look at where you are now as well as what your goal is. You’ve got 15 weeks which means you could… Start running As a complete beginner, you need 10 weeks to get to 5k. And the great news is there are plenty of weeks left to make this happen. My Beginners 0-5k groups starting in September are always popular – more popular than January b...

César García Urbano Taylor: Teaching People to Run

Image
Teaching People to Run The other Tuesday evening I was watching my group of runners warm up when I had a realisation. Those 20 women jogging and skipping their way round the netball court were there because of me. They’d turned up on a Tuesday night, not for the first time, and put their training in my hands. And it was an overwhelming moment. I’ve been thinking about it a lot since. I thought about it too last week when the latest group of beginners finished their first parkrun. It’s brilliant to see a group of non-runners grow in confidence each week and start to enjoy getting out. I know it’s hard starting running, and the fact that (most of them) come back week after week on a Saturday morning encourages me to keep showing up in my own training. I love being a coach and helping this all happen. Despite the cold nights that are coming our way, or the rain that I’ll be stood out in, and despite the admin that goes on behind the scenes, I love it. This summer I trained as a Tuto...

César García Urbano Taylor: Breastfeeding and running – the end of my 19-month experience

Image
Breastfeeding and running – the end of my 19-month experience What follows is my experience of juggling breastfeeding my son with getting back to running and running a marathon and eventually, after 19 months, stopping feeding. I’m no expert. If you’re finding breastfeeding or stopping breastfeeding difficult, there’s more sources of information at the bottom. I wrote a post about the first year of feeding and running, which you can find here . Other than a couple of bouts of mastitis, I had a really positive experience of breastfeeding and feel lucky that I’ve been able to do it. From not being sure if I would, to then deciding to give it a go for a few weeks, to then setting 6 months as an end point, I’ve continued for 19 months. When I decided it was time to stop, I found very little information on how to do that, and what I did find was solely focussed on the impact on the child, not the mother. So this is my experience. At the start of this year, and after my son was a year o...
