César García Urbano Taylor: Running The World Marathon Majors To Raise Awareness For CdLS

Running CdLS Into The Ground With Buckingham Palace behind her, British flags lining the final stretch and 40,000 other runners flanking her at the London Marathon in 2017, Karen Lyons raised her arms for her victory photo as she crossed the finish line. It would have been picture perfect had her blue running tights not made it blatantly obvious that she had peed her pants. Lyons has been running consistently since 2008 and just hit her marathon personal record of 4:13 in London. “I remember seeing this picture, every runner’s dream photo,” Lyons says, “and I was mortified.” She sent the picture to her friends who proverbially slapped her across the face. “They were like, ‘What is wrong with you? That’s you at the finish line of the London Marathon!” Lyons says. After she had some sense slapped into her, she turned to Instagram. “I posted this little narrative of how stupid we are to worry abo...

César García Urbano Taylor: What Causes Those Happy Tears At The Finish Line

Image
The Runner’s Cry Jennifer Watson has run seven marathons–and she’s cried at the finish line of every single one. “Each time there was something different that initially triggered the reaction, but the disbelief that I just ran 26.2 miles is probably the main reason,” said Watson, who is a group exercise instructor near Tampa, Fla. She’s not the only one weeping at the finish line. Watson is one of many runners that get a little choked up at big races and big finishes. “When individuals accomplish something, like winning a tennis championship or finishing a big race, they often feel overwhelming emotions,” said Dr. Oriana R. Aragón, an assistant professor at Clemson University’s College of Business. Aragón has completed numerous studies on the expression of emotions. “There is a strong sense of accomplishment and pride,” Aragón added. “When those emotions become highly intense, they seem to manifest in physical expressions that, on the surface, look a little contrary to how on...

César García Urbano Taylor: Never Discount The Power Of Your Journey As A Runner

Image
When we toe the line of a race, everyone is about to experience the exact some route. However, the journey we take to get to that starting line is uniquely our own. These journeys are comprised of heartache, determination and a resolve to keep moving forward, regardless of the circumstances that threatened to get in the way of our training. This combination is just one aspect of our own personal stories that help breathe life into our journeys. The beauty in this is that each and every single one of us has a story: something that makes us tick, a turning point that brought us to the running world, a moment during which we finally believed we could really accomplish a goal and the determination to keep going. We all find people along the way that share similar aspects of our stories. We runners can relate on a level that others will not understand, a level that connects us instantly. Our stories will encourage others to keep pushing forward when their lives are filled with struggle, a...

César García Urbano Taylor: How I Went From Hating Running To Becoming An Ironman

Image
For this week’s blog post, I interviewed one of my best running friends, Lori Prendergast. Read below for her story on how she transitioned from being a strict non-runner to an Ironman! Congratulations on completing Ironman Arizona in November. We first met 12 years ago while we were both training for our first sprint triathlon. I remember one of the first things you said to me was that you hated running! Why did you hate running? I thought I was too slow to be a good runner. Running felt like a chore to me and I did not enjoy it at all. It was a means to an end for me. I did not know anyone that ran my pace to train with. I started at a 15-minute-per-mile pace and just felt so defeated. Did you participate in sports previously? I was a high school swimmer; swimming came very naturally to me. I loved it and I still do. I did not take up biking until more recently, but immediately felt comfortable and confident on my bike. How did you change your attitude? As the sport of wom...

César García Urbano Taylor: 10 Running Songs By Singers Who Act (And Vice Versa)

Image
In show business, it’s not uncommon to hear about triple threats: folks who can act, sing and dance. Over the years, there has been an increasing number of references to quadruple threats, though the fourth skill varies from reference to reference. On one hand, it could be something akin to the main three talents—like the ability to compose, direct or play an instrument. Alternatively, MTV once created a category at the Video Music Awards specifically for multi-hyphenate performers and extended the qualifications to include entrepreneurship and/or activism. (The Quadruple Threat of the Year award was given just once—to Justin Timberlake in 2007—before it was retired.) To keep things simple, we’ve compiled a running playlist devoted to just one subgroup from the bunch above: singers who act. The list begins and ends with collaborations between folks from that class and their Hollywood and Broadway counterparts—actors who sing. Elsewhere in the mix, you’ll find “Rebel Rebel” from the s...
