Luton Half Marathon – the surprise race of 2019 For 12 weeks I ticked off the runs on my training plan, with a little readjustment here and there and a lot of juggling to make them happen. I got up early during the heatwave, and I headed out after dark as the nights drew in. Each run moved me closer to my goal of running a half-marathon PB this autumn, and more specifically to doing that at the Great Eastern Run in Peterborough. But that didn’t happen. Not, for once, because of any failing on my part. The race was cancelled as we stood in the rain and a muddy field at the start. After half an hour of getting colder, I was relieved more than annoyed when the announcement finally came over the tannoy. My partner and I set off to run home to my parents’, we needed to get warm and had no other way back than on foot. How to train after a cancelled race In the past year we’ve seen a number of races get cancelled, mostly because of the weather, but also (as my race last week was) because of other incidents beyond the organiser’s control. How you train after your race is cancelled is something that probably isn’t covered in your training plan. So let’s break it down. This is also relevant if you missed a race because of illness, but obviously you need to make sure you’re well again before you resume training. How soon can you race? Often this is something that’s beyond your control. You might be limited by the availability of races in the next few weeks or months and those that do exist may be full. Have a look on Find a Race or Let’s Do This . If you’ve tapered for your goal race, running the following week will just mean an extra week of taper. How to Write a Training Plan for Winter Running For many runners, the time between autumn races finishing and training for spring races starting is a time to run when and how much you want. And that’s absolutely fine. But for others, having some structure during this period can help you keep on track and stay motivated. Knowing how to write a training plan will help you do what’s right for you, and get the balance right. Here’s how to do it… If you’re running a spring half or full marathon, your plan for this will usually start December-January. Work out how many weeks you have between now and your next training plan starting. If you don’t have any other races planned, 8-12 weeks is a good plan length. Take a piece of paper, or your diary, or a spreadsheet (my personal favourite) and number the weeks until your next plan starts. Look at how many miles per week (volume) and how many runs per week (frequency)  you’re running right now. This will be the same as the mileage in we...

10 of the Best Big Marathons in the UK and Ireland I ran my first marathon at Brighton in 2010. It was the first year of the Brighton Marathon and I entered after missing out on a place in the London Marathon. I think that’s how a lot of runners’ journey begins – and entry into London and a rejection that spurs a Google search to find an alternative. Back then, London was the only big marathon in the UK, and while it’s still the biggest, a lot of cities now host races with the same big race feel. So if that’s what you’re after, here are a few suggestions. These are either races that I’ve done, or that I’ve been recommended by several runners I know. (Those I’ve run myself are marked with a *) Greater Manchester Marathon * It’s billed as the flattest marathon in the UK, and other than a hill in Altricham Town Centre, there’s not much by the way of gradient.
