César García Urbano Taylor: Autumn half marathon goal: Great Eastern Run

Image
Autumn half marathon goal: Great Eastern Run Try again, fail again, fail better. If you’ve been here a while, you’ll know I’ve failed many times over at things. I failed multiple times before actually running a Boston Qualifier. I had so much fun doing that, I decided not to enter and now I’ve started failing to qualify all over again. A couple of weeks ago, I ran a 10k PB. It was the first time I’d ever run under 45 minutes – something I’d tried several times over to do. It happened, not easily, but unexpectedly. Unexpected because, at 37,  I’m several years older than when I last tried to run under 45 minutes and I’ve had a baby since then too.   I don’t know if I was using my age and post-natal body as an excuse not to try to do certain things, but I was letting it limit what I though was possible. I had a goal I was chasing before I became pregnant that didn’t happen, and because it was out of reach then, I assumed it would be off the cards for good. In 2016, I want...

César García Urbano Taylor: Who coaches the coach?

Image
Who coaches the coach? I’m a big advocate of coaching. Of course I am, you say, that’s my job. But, I’ve never actually been coached myself. It was 2013 when I last followed a training plan. It was one from a book, and although I swapped some sessions around and adjusted paces when they didn’t suit or I just didn’t feel like doing the session in front of me, it was a plan written by someone else. Since then I’ve been responsible for my own training. I trained as a coach, I’ve read a lot of different coaching theories and I borrow different ideas and sessions like a running magpie. But how I knit it all together into weeks and months of training cycles has been very much my own doing. It has gone pretty well for me being, as the pros might call it, self-coached. I qualified for Boston (but didn’t go – I had a baby instead), I came back from having that baby and ran a marathon safely and then ran a 10k PB . But now it’s time to hand over to somebody else. I’ve known I wanted to w...

César García Urbano Taylor: Summer of Speed: Regents Park 10k

Image
Summer of Speed: Regents Park 10k This past year I’ve had some successful races by not looking at my watch too much and running ‘on feel’. It’s been a way of shaking off the self-imposed limitation I’ve had when thinking about times I might be able to run. I had a chat with a coach last week who had more belief in me than I had in myself, and some of that rubbed off. But if she’d told me to run 44:39, I would have thought she’d got her sums wrong. Eight weeks ago I ran 45:54 , and I’d never run a sub 45 10k before. In the week before the race, I’d twanged something in a yoga class and only ran once (an easy 5k) that week as a result. So I guess I was well rested but it wasn’t the race week I’d planned. On race morning, things were looking up though. I cycled the half hour down the road to the race with almost every traffic light I passed turning green. A good omen, right? The weather was perfect, cooler than the previous few days, just a light layer of rain on the course from an ea...
