César García Urbano Taylor: Life post pregnancy: running update

Image
Life post pregnancy: running update My baby is now six months old and last week I ran my first parkrun. I could have run one sooner – I’ve been running 5k and longer non-stop for a few months now – but my plan had always been to wait until I was ready, in body and mind, to push hard and see how fast I could run. Since my last post pregnancy running update , I’ve gradually been increasing my running. Other than a couple of weeks, I’ve been able to fit in three runs a week. How long these are and when exactly they happen has had to be decided on a week-by-week basis as energy levels and schedules change. But I’m very happy with how it’s gone. Looking at my training log, I’ve been back running (not counting the weeks of run/walk build-up) for 12 weeks, my maximum distance has been an 8 mile run and my biggest week so far has been 17 miles. I’ve also been going to post-natal pilates and doing my own strengthening exercises at home. As a coach, I often give my runners better advice tha...

César García Urbano Taylor: April / May Action Plan Update

Image
I completely forgot to share updates in April and May on my 2018 Action Plan. There have actually been many positives so I’m happy to share with y’all. Here is my combined April and May Action Plan Update! As a reminder, my action items were: Cook more. Find a church home. Build up to marathon training smartly. Eliminate consumer debt. Here’s how everything is going… I have been cooking more. I have made efforts to make one large batch of something on the weekends and use that as a base for lunches and dinners throughout the week. As we move into summer, my schedule is MUCH busier and cooking becomes more of a challenge – but also a bit easier in ways because summer produce is just so delicious and fresh. This has definitely been a positive couple of months on the cooking front.  I have found a new church! I’m very excited about this. I have been going to The District Church – in NW DC. I’m still very new and working on getting plugged in. It is hard to go from knowing j...

César García Urbano Taylor: How I Stayed Injury Free Running 100+ Mile Months

Image
As a hobby runner who isn’t getting any younger, I am constantly concerned about injury. At the same time, however, I frequently am too lazy to anything other than run. However, I really wanted to give my all for Grandma’s Marathon, so decided I would do some of the little things that might help me. I wanted to share how I stayed injury free running multiple 100+ mile months. I ran almost 800 miles between January and May of 2018. That was definitely the most mileage I had ever run in five months time and while it felt hard (and I was tired), I was able to stay injury free. Here are my tips on how I stayed injury free running relatively high mileage for multiple months in a row. Foam Rolling. I have always been inconsistent with rolling but really committed to trying to roll daily. That meant in practice I rolled most days of the week. This definitely helped to keep small knots from turning into big issues. Core Work. This has been incorporated into my plan this training cycle and...
